Obituary

Col. Hugh David Ebert, Jr., 92, of Columbia, died on Monday, October 27, 2025. Born on February 3, 1933, in Roanoke, VA, he was the son of the late Hugh David Ebert, Sr. and the late Katherine Reid Ebert.

Dave was born in Roanoke, VA before relocating early in his life to Lynchburg, VA. He attended E.C. Glass High School and excelled in activities such as track and field, as well as football. During his collegiate years, he attended Virginia Tech, where he became a member of the Corps of Cadets and continued his passion for sports, thriving in track and field and football for the Hokies. He later enlisted in the Air Force, upon his graduation from Virginia Tech in 1957. Dave served in the Air Force until 1986, achieving the rank of Colonel. Upon his retirement, he moved to Columbia, SC, where he made many lasting memories. He was a lifelong member of the German Club at Virginia Tech. He also loved golfing and going to the beach.

Medals, Badges, Citations, and Campaign Ribbons Awarded or Authorized: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Airman's Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, Combat Readiness Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and Small Arms Expert.

Survivors include his son, Hugh D. Ebert III (Linda) of North Carolina; granddaughter, Taylor Stoltz (Matt); and two great-grandsons, Marshall and Thomas.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Bell Ebert; daughter, Kelly Parker; brother, Marshall Ebert; and sister, Shearer Ramsey.

Dave was a leader, a good friend, and a big teddy bear to his family and friends. As one family member stated, "I'll always remember Dave as a happy, sweet teddy bear of a man." He was a caring man, especially to his golden retrievers, Max, Bear and Beau. He was a man of few words, but all listened when he spoke. God blessed us for 92 years and Dave will never be forgotten.

The family would like to express gratitude to Palmettos for the care and kindness provided to Dave. Also, thank you to Caris Health Care for their love and support.

A service for Col. Ebert and his wife, Peggy, will be held on Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 AM, at the Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Virginia.
