Columbia: Mrs. Irene Sumpter Pixley, 87, died on Friday, July 27, 2012. Born on July 12, 1925 in Birmingham, England, she was a daughter of the late John Sumpter and Annie George Sumpter.
Irene loved taking care of animals, her home and the flowers in her yard. A member of Ascension Lutheran Church, she had worked as an occupational therapist at SC State Hospital, and later as a seamstress at Stone Manufacturing Company.
Survivors include her nieces, Teresa (Mike) Lake of Ridgeway, Lurine (Thomas) Embrey of Cayce, Barbara (Eddie) Collins of Columbia; nephew, Graham Sumpter and sister-in-law, Ellen Sumpter both of Birmingham, England; and many other loving family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Levi Pixley; son, Danny Pixley, and brother, John Sumpter.
A funeral service will be held 12 o'clock, Monday, July 30th, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia, with Chaplain Ken Lake officiating. Burial will follow at Sawney's Creek Baptist Church Old Cemetery, Hwy 34 E, Ridgeway, SC 29130. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 11 o'clock.
