Iris E. Chappell, 95, of Columbia, died on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Born in Detroit, MI, on June 8, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Herbert S. and Laura Kiburz Ewing. Mrs. Chappell, attended Lew Wallace High School and graduated from Little Rock High School in Arkansas. She moved to Columbia in 1951 with her family and began working for South Carolina Vocational and Rehabilitation where she retired in 1991. She was a longtime member of Bayview Baptist Church and most recently North Trenholm Baptist Church.
Iris was a devoted Sunday School teacher who found great joy in serving her church community. Her loving spirit extended beyond the church, as she dedicated many years to caring for loved ones and friends with a selfless heart. Family was at the center of Iris's life. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose presence always brought her immense happiness. Iris had a deep love for travel and was passionate about exploring the United States. Her enthusiasm for life was evident in her fervent support of her favorite sports teams—cheering for the Braves during baseball season and rooting for Clemson and Carolina in football.
Iris's legacy of love, service, and joy will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Survivors include her daughters, Charlene Chappell and Christi C. Bradley; granddaughters, Ashley Dickert (Fletcher) and Michelle Fort(Daniel); great-grandchildren, Hunter and Kylie Fort, Zoe, Harper and Sadie Dickert; as well as her four-legged companion, Sweet Pea. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Chappell; sons-in-law, Ray Bradley and Mack Windham; infant siblings; and dear friends, Dot Helms and Patsy Robinson.
The funeral service for Mrs. Chappell will be held at 11 o'clock, Friday, September 6th, at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with Pastor David Knapp officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Serenity Gardens of Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 10 o'clock.
