James Stephen Arpaia, 88, of Columbia, died Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the home of his son in Columbia, SC. Born in New Haven, CT, on March 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Phyllis Naples Arpaia. Mr. Arpaia attended UCONN and worked as a Machine salesman and owner prior to his retirement. Once retired, he and his late wife, Rita, enjoyed spending time travelling across the country in their RV as well as going to car clubs with their classic cars. He was raised in New Haven Connecticut and is a former Marine. He and his wife were residents in St. Augustine for many years prior to relocating to South Carolina.

Survivors include his children, James C. Arpaia (Cheryl), Phyllis Shackleford (Randy), and Janice Englehart (Peter); six grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, and wife, Rita Formica Arpaia, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Arpaia (Rosemary), and Vincent Arpaia (Mary).

A memorial service for Mr. Arpaia will be held at a later date in Connecticut and a celebration service in St. Augustine. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
