James Harvard Cobb, 88, of Lugoff, SC, died Saturday, March 2, 2024. Born December 31, 1935, in Langley, SC, he was a son of the late James A. Cobb and Clara Durden Cobb. Mr. Cobb graduated from LBC High School, where he was a standout athlete in all sports. He was a proud veteran of the US Air Force and while serving his country he met the mother of his children, Shirley Hornbrook Cobb, in Panama City, FL. In his youth he was a phenomenal amateur boxer. Mr. Cobb was awarded Golden Gloves and All Service Champion Boxer while in the US Air Force. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed spending his spare time with his friends at the hunting club. Mr. Cobb also loved sports, especially University of South Carolina Athletics. He was the owner and operator of Discount Fence for over 40 years.
Survivors include his children, Deborah Cobb Sturgess (William "Rocky") of Lugoff and Anthony Yale Cobb (Carolyn) of Lugoff; grandchildren, Andrew Turner, Kelly Marie Lyle (Patrick), and Cory Alexander Sturgess (Jennifer ); great grandchildren, Ryleigh, Mason, Aiken, Delaney, Cory, Jr., Austin, Kyra, and Grayson. He also leaves behind his brothers, Bill and Jerry Cobb, as well as his sister, Vie Swindler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse of 50 years, Mary Ann Herrington and brother, Johnny Cobb.
The funeral service for Mr. Cobb will be held at 12:30 o'clock, Monday, March 11th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC. Burial will follow at 2 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 11:30 o'clock.
The Cobb family would like to give a special thank you to family friend, Debbie Davis, for always being there on Saturday to care for dad and taking him out to eat. He loved you and we thank you.
