James Kenneth Dowey, 83, of North, SC, formerly of Columbia, died on Monday, November 18, 2024. Born in Blaney, SC, on January 24,1941, he was a son of the late Jay Dealous and Eunice Thelma Stockman Dowey. Mr. Dowey was a graduate of Dentsville High School and served in the United States Navy. Following his service in the Navy, Mr. Dowey worked for Southern Railway and for Woodmen of the World, now known as Woodmen Life.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Reetz Dowey; children, Rev. Dr. Gregory Dowey (Missie), Cheryl Dowey Ward (Charles), and Laura Dowey Szakovits (Brian); grandchildren, Clifford Charles Ward, Anna Leigh Dunton (Andrew), Clayton Kenneth Ward (Ashley), Jackson Dealous Dowey; great-grandchildren, Miles Clayton Ward, Jonah Clifford Ward, Grayson Charles Ward, Abigail Joleigh Dunton; and siblings, Lois Dowey Geiger and Connie Dowey Zink (Millard); as well as a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Naomi Coutsos, Jeanette Arant, and Eula Bell Rollins.

The funeral service for Mr. Dowey will be held at 12 o'clock, Friday, November 22nd, at Harmony Baptist Church, 998 Tookiedoo Lane, Elgin, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. The family will greet friends after the burial in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
