James Bennett Henderson III

James Bennett “Jay” Henderson III, 56, passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2026. He was born on June 10, 1970, in Greenville, South Carolina, and grew up in Columbia. Jay graduated from Spring Valley High School and attended Midlands Technical College.

Loved by all who knew him, Jay lived his life with joy and was truly a friend to everyone. His infectious laugh could light up any room, and he was always the life of the party. He loved all sports, but cheering for the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Avalanche was his passion. He also enjoyed fishing, great food and spending time with the people he loved. Jay loved his friends fiercely, and his warmth, laughter, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed.

Jay is survived by his mother, Mary Jane Henderson; his sister, Jennifer Henderson Dupree and her husband, Jack; his nephew, Jacob Dupree Jr.; his niece, Julianne Dupree; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Bennett Henderson Jr.

Jay leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and laughter. Although our hearts are broken by his unexpected passing, we will always remember the joy he brought into our lives and the love he shared so freely with everyone around him.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 18, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Shives Funeral Home, located at 7600 Trenholm Road Extension in Columbia, South Carolina. A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association.
