James "Jim" Douglas Hendricks, 87, of Winston Salem, NC, passed away on October 31, 2023 in Columbia, SC. He was born on December 31, 1935, to the late Russell Ward Hendricks and Ernestine Velma Cranfill Hendricks. Jim was a family man known for his sense of humor, laughter, and love for sports. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing. Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Fran Hendricks; his daughter, Michele Hicks of Columbia, SC; his daughter Christy Carter (husband Ryker Carter) of St. Simons Island, GA, along with four bonus granddaughters, Kinsley Carter, Jenna Carter, Dianna Carter, and Alley Carter; and his sister, Dorothy Ballard (John, deceased) of Columbia, SC.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Paterson of Blythewood, SC. Jim attended Albany Junior College in Albany, GA. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer from 1955 to 1957.
During his military service, Jim played baseball and won the All-Army Championship in 1955 and 1956. He continued his love for baseball by playing professionally with the Boston Red Sox and Mets organizations as a third baseman (batted left-handed, threw right-handed). Jim was a successful professional insurance agent for over 60 years. He was the founder and owner of Flexible Benefits Insurance Agency, Inc.
Jim's dedication and passion for his work were evident throughout his career. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, and also attended Village Church in Blythewood, SC. Jim found solace and strength in his faith. In his free time, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. These hobbies brought him joy and relaxation.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Village Church in Blythewood, SC, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
The funeral service for Mr. Hendricks will be held at 6:30 o'clock, Wednesday, November 1st, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 5 o'clock. A graveside service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Thursday, November 2nd, at 10 o'clock.
Jim Hendricks will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His infectious laughter, kind heart, and dedication to his family and community will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
