James "Jay" Heyward Mathis, Jr., 52, of Columbia, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Anne Mathis and the late James Heyward Mathis. James loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an electrician and handyman.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his special companion, Barbara; children, Darryl Love (Chastity), Talon Mathis, and Ashton Mathis; granddaughter, Brynleigh Love; and sister, Beth Mattox.

A service will be held 11 o'clock, Friday, June 9th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., with Dr. Rick Ivey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
