Obituary

James Michael Wyatt, 77, of Columbia, died on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in Columbia, SC following a short illness in the hospital. He was born in Cleveland, OH, on September 30, 1946, to the late Herman C. and Jeannette Moore Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt was a college graduate with a masters degree in finance, who served in the Infantry, first in Vietnam, and then spent the next 21 years of active duty as a Ranger in the Infantry as an Officer, serving his country in various locations. He then spent over 30 years in civil service at Ft. Jackson as the Range Officer, from which he retired six years ago.

He enjoyed traveling, his family and his beloved dogs, Finn and George.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie Ptashkin Wyatt; daughter, Rebeca W. McLaws; step daughters, Dr. Nicole P. Sherman (Matthew), and Amanda B. Ptashkin; grandchildren, Shelby Nunley, Hunter McLaws, Ethan McLaws, and Palmer Sherman; sisters, Barbara Specht (Albert) and Karen Fruitger (Chris). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Ruben Wyatt; and his first wife, Barbara D. Wyatt.

The graveside service for Mr. Wyatt will be held at 2 o'clock, Thursday, January 25th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, with Rabbi Jonathan Case officiating. The Family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Wednesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
