Obituary

Janet Roslyn Lamont Martin, 97, was born July 23, 1925 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She was a daughter of the late Raymond and Roberta Lamont.

Soon after graduating from Pittsfield High School in June 1942, Janet went to work for the General Electric Company in Pittsfield. It was there, that she met her husband, Air Force Major Stanley S. Martin when he returned to work in the same office after serving five years in the war. His service was mostly in the South Pacific at Leyte Island. They were married on March 9, 1947. In 1956, Janet, Stan and their two children moved to Columbia when Stan was appointed to head the Financial Department of the new GE plant in Irmo, SC. Stan died in March of 2010, just two weeks after they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Janet and her family were charter members of St. Michael and All Angels' Church, where Janet gave of her time and talents as long as her health permitted. These included teaching Sunday School for 32 years, chairman of the Churchyard Committee and President of the Episcopal Women. For 26 years, she planned and directed the annual Epiphany Feast of Lights Pageant. She also was the "greeter" at the 8 o'clock service for 12 years. Each month for 14 years, she wrote and sent miscellaneous articles to the parish homebound and to the parishioners serving in the United States Armed Forces.

In the community, Janet was a Girl Scout leader, Troop #138, a teacher in the "Each One Teach One" adult literacy program. She helped the Red Cross with their blood drives and donated her blood many times over many years. She was given a certificate from Satchelford Elementary School for 10 years of weekly reading with 1st graders who needed extra help.
For many years, Janet enjoyed playing golf at Columbia Country Club where she served two terms as President of the Ladies Golf Association. Her high handicap did not keep her from getting a very "rare and lucky" hole-in-one. She was a very strong fan of the USC Gamecocks and Atlanta Braves. Janet had a good sense of humor. She loved to laugh at many things and to make others laugh. The time spent with her were usually happy times.

Janet was predeceased by her husband, Stan; their daughter, Christine who was a Columbia Police Officer; her parents; and her four brothers, Ray, Bill, Bob and Edwin Lamont.
She is survived by her two sons, Larry of Florida and Rob of Columbia.

Larry and Rob wish to give their heartfelt thanks to the staff at NHC-National Healthcare Parklane for the good care of the mother over the last 5 years. Also, their sincere thanks to our St. Michael and All Angels' church family for their prayers and loving support to Janet.
