Obituary

Janie Beatrice Williams Jackson Montgomery, 72, of Elgin, South Carolina, passed away on January 22, 2023. Born in Laurens, South Carolina, she was a daughter of Beatrice Byrd Williams and the late David Lent Williams, Sr. Janie was a humble servant of God and lived her life serving our Savior and sharing the love of Christ. A caring, Godly woman, she touched and blessed the lives of many.

Janie was the loving wife of LTC (R) Joshua Henry Montgomery. The Montgomery's had a long, successful marriage of almost 34 years. Janie graduated from Ford High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from South Carolina State University and Master of Science in Psychology and Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University. Not only was she a proud military spouse but she also selflessly served in the United States Air Force and dedicated a total of six years, with four years being active and two as reserved. Once completing her service with the USAF, she pursued a career working as a Management Analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense. After 37 years, Janie retired from the DOD as a GS14 Army civilian. In her free time, Janie enjoyed walking, staying active, and spending time with her granddaughter, Avery.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her son, Thomas H. Jackson (Libra) of Rock Hill, SC; stepdaughter, Dr. Sheryl Lynn Mitchell (Michael) of Blythewood, SC; granddaughter, Avery Jackson; grandson, Shane Blakeney; siblings, Winfort (Wint) Phynes Jennings (Frank) of Dallas, TX, Nancy Smith (Charles) of Lancaster, SC, David Williams, Jr. of Laurens, SC, and Joyce Watts of Laurens, SC; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Along with her father, she is preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Charles Watts.

The funeral service for Mrs. Montgomery will be held at 1 o'clock on Sunday, January 29th, at Poplar Spring AME Church, 21578 Highway 221 N Laurens, SC 29360. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 4 until 7 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. Columbia, SC 29223. The burial will take place at 1 o'clock on Tuesday, January 31st, Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.
