Obituary
Jay Alan Marra, 60, of Columbia, died Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Born November 10, 1959, in Newberry, SC, he was the son of Barbara Douglas.
Jay graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1977. He enjoyed being in the gym and in his younger days was a bodybuilder. Jay was an avid sports enthusiast and especially loved NASCAR. Jay worked for United Event Services for many years providing security services to many of the top entertainers in the world. As the backstage security supervisor for numerous stadium and arena shows, Jay worked with bands including: The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Guns & Roses, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Kid Rock, Poison, Motley Crue, and many others. He worked directly with the bands and the touring staff to secure the entertainers. As a lover of rock music, Jay loved his job. Over his 30-year career, he accumulated many collectibles from the shows he had worked. Another one of his positions with United Event Services was acting as the lead security supervisor of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. He worked at the convention center since it opened in 2004 and will be greatly missed by all.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his siblings, Ed Marra (Eleanor), Bobb Douglas, and Dana Douglas; nephews, Justin Douglas Thain, Trent Douglas, Grae Marra, Eric Marra, and Clint Rodgers (Courtney); as well as his niece, Kristi Douglas Loadholt (Michael). He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Grace Bobb Gilstrap.
A graveside service for Jay will be held 12 o'clock, Tuesday, March 24th, at West End Cemetery, 131 Crosson St., Newberry, SC 29108, casual attire. Reverend Richard Lyttleton will officiate. The family will greet friends briefly following the service at the cemetery.
Jay will be available for viewing from 1 until 5 o'clock Sunday, March 22nd, as well as Monday, March 23rd from 9 until 5 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
