Jeffrey Joseph Hubbell was born November 3, 1942, in Denver, CO, the son of Jane Faden and Stan Hubbell. He grew up on Ivanhoe Street in Denver and graduated from East High School.
He first went to the University of Colorado before enlisting in the United States Navy where he served as Hospital Corpsman, Second Class (1961-1965). After completing his tour, Jeffrey enrolled in Minot State University to continue his undergraduate studies before attending Colorado State University, graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
He first practiced in Los Angeles, CA, for four years before moving to the University of Georgia where he completed a three-year veterinary medical residency. His last position was as veterinary pathologist for Clemson University in Columbia, SC.
Along with his veterinary duties, Jeffrey was actively involved in veterinary politics, serving for eight years in the AVMA House of Delegates, serving in all the chairs of the Greater Columbia Association of Veterinarians. He was never happier than when he was campaigning for improvements in veterinary medicine.
In retirement Jeffrey gardened, growing potatoes mostly, and traveling with the Columbia Museum of Art; he was a supporter of the Humanities Council of South Carolina, the U. of South Carolina Caroliniana Library, and local conservation agencies. He also served on the board of SCANA Investors.
Jeffrey is survived by his wife Toni Goodwin Hubbell, sons Karl Hubbell (Sarah) of Denver, CO, Wilson Hubbell of Nashville, TN, Edward Goodwin (Lane) of Columbia, SC, his sister Becky Hassell (Joel) of Golden, CO, six grandchildren, a nephew and niece. He was predeceased by his son, Jay Hubbell of Columbia, SC.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 3 from 4-6 pm at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The funeral service will be10 am Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at St. David's Episcopal Church, 605 Polo Road, Columbia, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to local animal shelters or charities of their choice.
