Jerome Baughman, 89, of Columbia, died Friday, December 29, 2017, peacefully at his home. Born on October 11, 1928 in North, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Jerome and Bertha Williamson Baughman. He signed a professional baseball contract when he was 17 years old with St. Louis, playing centerfield, where he played for seven years. As a business owner, he operated several golf driving ranges and a Par 3 course in the Columbia area. He also owned and operated American Mfg. Co. before retiring. Teaching anyone, especially children, the game of golf was enjoyable to him. He was the coach for the Riverside Golf Center, where his team won first place for SCJGA. Jerome had many friends and family who loved him, and he will be missed by all. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Miles Baughman, of 66 years; five sons, Guerry, David (Kathleen), Samuel (Melodie), Lowell, Timothy (Paula); and one daughter, Catherine Sexton (David); eight grandchildren, Wyatt, Rachael, Sam, Lauren, Miles, Isabella, Hannah and Carly; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 11 o'clock, Monday, January 1, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Derek W. H. Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock in Jackson Hall. Entombment will be held 11 o'clock, Tuesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
