Jerry Lee Shepherd, 66, of Lexington, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013. Born June 8, 1946 in Ashe County, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Chester Lee Shepherd and Zina Faye Sheets Shepherd. A US Army veteran, Mr. Shepherd served his country during the Vietnam War. After his military service, Jerry joined the City of Columbia Police Department, where he worked until 1979. He then worked in route sales until his retirement in 2007.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sherry Marie Powers Shepherd; his daughter, Jessica (Brent) Hilton of West Columbia; grandchildren, Breanna Hilton (Princess) and Bethany Hilton (Peanut and Trouble); sisters, Anna Lee Poe of Crumpler, NC, May Sue Royal of Laurel Springs, NC; uncle, Dean Shepherd of Jefferson, NC; aunt, Margie Mitchell of Sparta, NC; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Shepherd; and a sister, Ola Kendall.
The funeral service for Mr. Shepherd will be held at 1 o'clock, Monday, June 10th, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia with City of Columbia Police Department Chaplain Clyde Waters officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Sunday evening at the funeral home. Jerry's former co-workers from the City of Columbia Police Department are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers.
