Joan Young Parnell, 82, of Columbia, died Sunday, January 18, 2015. Born November 13, 1932 in Candler, NC, she was a daughter of the late Dewey George and Jenny Mae Curtis Young. Joan believed in the value of hard work her whole life, both as a medical transcriptionist with Moncrief Army Hospital and Palmetto Health Richland, and as a very active member of North Trenholm Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Childs (Mike) of Columbia; her granddaughter, Krista Myers (Adam) of Gun Barrel City, TX; her great granddaughter, Caroline Myers; her sister, Edith Kilpatrick of Chapin; her brother, James Young of Irmo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by brothers, Curtis Young and Dewey G. Young, Jr.

The funeral service for Mrs. Parnell will be held 2 o'clock, Thursday, at North Trenholm Baptist Church, 6515 N Trenholm Rd, Columbia, with The Rev. Dr. Steve Cloud, The Rev. R. Joseph Copeland and Mr. Ross Young officiating. Entombment will follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be the deacons of the church. Members of the Anderson Quattlebaum Sunday School Class are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the church, prior to the service, beginning at 1 o'clock.
