Mrs. Joan Mary Simmons Oliver Taylor, 92, of Columbia, died February 15, 2016. Born on April 14, 1923, in Southampton, England, she was a daughter of the late Frederic and Eva Bone Simmons. Joan served in the Royal Air Force during WWII, and during that time, she met her husband, Mr. Arnie Oliver. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and was a longtime member of Capital City Baptist Church where she enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of the Lydia Sunday School Class. Joan was an avid reader, enjoying several books each week, and she delighted in sharing her cross-stitch with others.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Anita Oliver Hansen, Sue Oliver Rewis (Danny), and Teresa Oliver Wilson; sons, Arnie Oliver, Jr. (LaFaye), and Gene Oliver; step-daughter, Myrtice Cox; the Taylor family, Juanita Wilson, and Betty Braddy; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Stella Curnow; niece, Heather Brown; "adopted" daughter, Cynthia Hall; and special friends, Mamie Rewis and Ida Caple.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Arnie Oliver and Horace Taylor; daughter, Carolyn Kirkland; son, Rexton Oliver; grandchildren, Jody Oliver, and Wendy Ann Oliver; and brother, Cyril Simmons.
A memorial service for Mrs. Taylor will be held at 11 o'clock, Saturday, February 20th, at Capital City Baptist Church, with The Rev. Paul Monroe and The Rev. Bryan Hunt officiating. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to Capital City Baptist Church, Heaven Train Ministry, 2243 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC 29223.
