On Saturday, March 25, 2023, Joe Frank Sellers of Newport, TN, son of the late Arthur Sellers and Ruby Sellers Howell, passed away at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Sellers; his daughter, Deborah Craig of Heath Springs, SC; his son, Eric Sellers of Fayetteville, NC; his granddaughter, Brittany Craig of Heath Springs, SC; and his sister Sarah Smith of Augusta , GA.
At only 17 years old, Joe decided to join the army, but his parents would not sign for him. It only became possible when his aunt told him that if he was dumb enough to go in that young, then she was dumb enough to sign for him. Throughout his military career, Joe Sellers had a combined total of thirty-four years of government service. During this time, he received many awards which include a Meritorious Unit Citation, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, a Good Conduct Medal with 2 Bronze Loops, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Campaign Stars, and a short tour Air Force Overseas Ribbon, just to name a few.
After enlisting, Joe was stationed at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. Subsequently, he was stationed at Fort Bragg and then Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. In 1952, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a master sergeant in 1977. About ten years after first joining the military, Joe and his wife Evelyn were married on October 19, 1958. In 1986, he retired from working for the US Postal Service and enjoyed being a private pilot for many years.
Seeing as Fort Jackson was where Joe's military service began, we only saw it fitting that it also be where his career ends. It is our greatest honor to have our beloved father, grandfather, and brother laid to rest in the same place that laid the foundation for much of his life. Visitation will be held at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, from 12:00PM - 1:00PM on Wednesday, April 05, 2023; following visitation, the funeral will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, at 2:00PM.
