Joel R. Barnes, 90, of Columbia, SC, died on Monday, February 23, 2026. Born on April 16, 1935, in Platteville, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Samuel and Marion Cordingly Barnes.
Joel spent his formative years in Platteville, Wisconsin, where he developed a passion for engineering and a love for the outdoors. He pursued his academic aspirations at the Wisconsin Institute of Technology, earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. This educational foundation enabled him to build a distinguished career as a civil engineer in the steel industry, where he dedicated over 30 years to shaping the infrastructure that supports our daily lives.
A man of many talents, Joel was an avid woodworker, finding joy and satisfaction in creating with his hands. His home woodshop was not just a space for crafting but a haven where he found peace and purpose. He took great pleasure in building decks and patios, leaving behind beautiful reminders of his skill and passion.
His legacy is also reflected in his contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and later became a decorated troop leader. His dedication to mentoring young scouts earned him numerous awards.
Joel was not only devoted to his profession but also to his family. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Rose Marie Flanagan Barnes and his children, Wendy Barnes and James "Jim" Barnes. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Barnes.
The memorial service for Mr. Barnes will be held at 12 o'clock noon, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Extension, Columbia, SC.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 11 o'clock.
