John Adam Smith, 85, of Chapin, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012. Born in Black Creek, NC, he was a son of the late Dr. Anderson Jones Smith and Bettie Allen Smith. Following his service in the US Navy Reserves during World War II, Mr. Smith attended East Carolina Teachers College and studied horticulture at NC State College before embarking on a career managing and developing cemeteries throughout the Southeast. He later went on to establish Chapin Building Supply where he worked until his retirement.
Survivors include his children, George Adam Smith (Luanne) of Columbia, Bettie Smith Sherrod (Tom) of Chapin; grandchildren, Caroline Wasielewski (Steve), Jennifer Skipper (Sean), and Taylor Smith; great grandchildren, Abigail and Kaily Wasielewski and Samuel Skipper; brothers, A. J. Smith of Greenville and Dr. Claude A. Smith (Regina) of Winston-Salem, NC; sister, Edna Smith (Jasper) Stem of Wilson, NC; sister-in-law, Lena Smith of Goldsboro, NC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, India Burden Smith; and brother, Franklin R. Smith.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be held 2 o'clock, Friday, October 19th, at Chapin United Methodist Church, 415 Lexington Ave, Chapin, with The Rev. Jody Flowers and The Rev. Paul Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall prior to the service, beginning at 1 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home of Columbia is assisting the family.
