John Creighton Buchanan, III, 83, died Sunday, January 5, 2014. Born on October 4, 1930 in Winnsboro, SC, he was a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John C. (Mary Douglas) Buchanan, Jr. After serving in the US Air Force and graduating from Duke University, John moved to Florida, where he met his wife, Margaret. They relocated to Macon, GA and it was there that John developed his lifelong passion for the Georgia Bulldogs. In 1970, they moved to Columbia where he became a charter member of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia for over 40 years as well as St. John's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry.
Mr. Buchanan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Riley Buchanan; his son, John C. Buchanan, IV and wife, Tracy, as well as their children, John Creighton Buchanan, V, Carter Coleman Buchanan, and Frances Riley Buchanan, all of Alpharetta, GA; his son, W. Davis Buchanan and wife, Missy, as well as their children, Sarah Greer Buchanan and William Davis Buchanan, Jr, all of Columbia; and his sister, Flo Buchanan Heyward, also of Columbia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Buchanan was preceded in death by his brother, Davis Douglas Buchanan.
A memorial service for Mr. Buchanan will be held 2 o'clock, Friday, January 10th at St. John's Episcopal Church, Wheat Street, with interment in the church's Memorial Garden. The family will greet friends in Heyward Hall immediately following the service. Members of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
