Mr. John Chandler "Jack" Buggel (93) passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024. Jack was born on July 18, 1931 in Blackville, SC, and was the son of the late John A. Buggel and Agnes C. Buggel, both of Charleston, SC. He graduated from Charleston High School in the Class of 1949.
Jack was a member of the United States Army during the Korean War and served in combat in the 187th Regimental Combat Team (Airborne) under the command of Brigadier General William C. Westmoreland. He was a paratrooper and his awards include Army Jump Wings and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
He was employed by the Standard Oil Company (Exxon) for over 35 years and was assigned to offices in Charleston, Georgetown and Columbia, as well as in Baton Rouge, LA, where he retired in 1986.
A long-standing member of Columbia Country Club, having originally joined in 1969, Jack was an avid golfer and achieved a lifetime total of 8 holes in one.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his twin sister, Ann Buggel Herndon (Francis). He is survived by his nephew, Frank Herndon of Savannah, GA, niece, Scottie Herndon Trapp (Danny) of Charlotte, NC, great niece Simmons Trapp Purdy (Russ) of Columbia, SC, great nephew Davis Chandler Herndon of Atlanta, GA, great niece Catherine Scott Trapp of Washington, DC, and great niece Elizabeth Joann Herndon of Savannah, GA.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 26 followed by a Celebration of Life and Witness to the Resurrection at 3:00 pm at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd Ext., Columbia, SC 29223. A reception will follow at 4:00 pm at Columbia Country Club. Burial arrangements will be handled by Stuhr Funeral Home, 232 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC. A grave-side service and interment will take place in the family plot of Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC at 11:30 am on Friday, December 6.
