Dr. John Henry “Jack” Heckman, 92, died on Friday, May 29, 2026. Born on November 1, 1933, in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Norman Heckman and Cecilia Niehaus Heckman.
Dr. Heckman is best remembered for his love of teaching, which he pursued through a professional career in HR and training, as well as teaching undergraduate philosophy. In his spare time, he loved playing tennis, reading mystery novels, and doing crossword puzzles. He was a devout Catholic who attended St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Martha Heckman; his daughter Genevieve Heckman Nauhaus (Ian Nauhaus); and his grandchildren Theo Nauhaus and Mae Nauhaus.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son John Kevin Heckman; his cousins Mary Agnes Masterson, Philip Masterson, Bill Flynn, and Anna Lea Wyatt; and his sister-in-law Carmen Valdivia.
The funeral mass will be held at 11 o’clock on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at St. John Neumann Church, 100 Polo Rd. Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 10 o’clock until 11 o’clock, at the church.
The family requests memorials be made to the Carnation Foundation Patient Fund in honor of Dr. Heckman.
