John David Johnson, 63, a resident of Forest Acres, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2020, at Providence Health Hospital, Columbia, SC, following a brief illness. Born in Oakland, CA, he spent his childhood in Castro Valley, CA, until the family moved to Columbia, SC, in 1974. He was a graduate of A.C. Flora High School and the University of South Carolina. John was employed in finance, mortgage and banking businesses in Columbia, SC, for over 37 years. Most recently, John was semi-retired and truly enjoyed working part-time at Home Depot and volunteering at Providence Health Hospital and the SC Governor's Mansion.
John was a proud South Carolinian and assumed the role of family historian. He loved The Palmetto State, his South Carolina heritage, and was passionate about preserving family history. He was a huge supporter of local businesses, first responders, the Governor's Mansion, and the Columbia Fireflies. He enjoyed attending PGA golf tournaments in SC and GA over the years. John had a kind, generous and giving heart, always wanting to do something special for his friends, acquaintances and the community. He was an animal lover, had a special fondness for cats, and loved and cared for many throughout his lifetime.
John was the son of the late Jack Louis Johnson and Florence Hartstene Burn Johnson. He is survived by his brother, Michael Johnson (Valarie); sisters, Michelle Bridge (Gene), and Patricia Zander (David); nieces; nephews; aunts; cousins; his beloved cats – Babi and Miss Kitty; and many special friends.
A service will be held 2 o'clock, Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC. All are invited to attend; however, masks are required, and social distancing is enforced to maintain a safe environment for all. A livestream may be viewed by visiting John's tribute page at ShivesFuneralHome.com. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 1 o'clock. A private burial service will take place at Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery, Society Hill, SC, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Governor's Mansion Foundation at the South Carolina Governor's Mansion, The South Caroliniana Society at the University of South Carolina, or a charity of one's choice.
