John Meade Coleman, 73, of Columbia, died Tuesday, March 15, 2016, after a lengthy illness. John grew up in Columbia, attended public schools, and graduated from Dreher High in 1960. He was active in sports from Little League through USC, where he pitched for the Gamecocks. After teaching and coaching at Dreher for several years he began his life-long career in real estate.
John is survived by his wife, Lucy McLain; their children, Laine Pope (Lowndes) and Meade Coleman (Allison); grandchildren, Lowndes, Jr., Coleman, and Banks Pope, Margaret and Elizabeth Coleman; brother, Steve Coleman (Llawayne); in-laws, Jeanie Rubin (Hyman), Cam McLain (Sandra), Emmie May (John), and Chappy Manning (Deas). He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel S. and Vivian Meade Coleman; and his sister, Iolene Wooten (Jay).
The memorial service for Mr. Coleman will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at Shandon United Methodist Church with Dr. Michael L. Guffee, Sr., officiating, after which a reception with the family will be held in Player Hall. Private committal in the church columbarium will precede the service.
