John Gillyard Monroe, 65, of Lexington, died Tuesday, September 27, 2022. Born September 17, 1957, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Gillyard Percival Monroe, Jr. and Blanche Virginia Rabon Monroe.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Monroe was a railroad engineer for Norfolk Southern Corporation for 26 years. He had a large heart and always gave as much as possible to others. Mr. Monroe was very charismatic and had the unique ability to make lasting impressions on family, friends, and strangers. He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed the company of his family immensely. He loved the outdoors, fishing, golfing, being a prankster, and spending time with his dog, Blue.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda C. Monroe; children, Drew Gillyard Monroe (Kelsey) of Lugoff, Misty Monroe Burroughs of Lexington, and Chelsea Greiner of Lexington; grandchildren, Ryann Monroe and Logan Monroe; special cousin and lifelong friend, William "Billy" Rabon, Jr.; sisters, Myra Monroe of Elgin and Cynthia Stewart (Don) of Elgin; as well as his nieces and nephews, Denise Thomley (David), Hank Goff (Cate), and Ashley Smith (Matt). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gillyard Percival Monroe, III.
The funeral service for Mr. Monroe will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday, October 4th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC with Reverend Gene Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, 1177 Wildwood Lane, Elgin, SC 29045.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 12:30 o'clock.
