John Henry Owens, 76, of Columbia, SC passed away Friday, October 12, 2018, in Lexington Medical Center from Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

He was born in Kershaw County, SC, on February 13, 1942, to the late C.B. and Nettie Melton Owens.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Angie Carol Catoe Owens; a son, Derrick Owens, and his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Angela Owens Raley all of Columbia, SC; his granddaughter, Keri Beard Smith and her husband, Dakota of Lancaster, SC; sisters, Shirley Owens Lucas of Columbia, SC, and Ada Owens Smith of Westville, SC; and six nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frankie Owens.

John worked for Carolina Door Products in Columbia, SC and eventually retired from Overhead Door Corporation as Regional Sales Manager. He was a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. John was a Shriner, a member of the Jamil Temple, and a member of the Dentsville Masonic Lodge #398. He was a former member of the Woodlands Country Club in Columbia, SC for 39 years. John was an avid, lifelong Gamecock Fan, who loved to travel, and spend time with his family and friends.

The funeral service for Mr. Owens will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, October 15th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. Memorials can be made to Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223.
