John Eugene Phillips, born September 28, 1957, in Shabani, Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), went to be with his Lord May 18, 2017.
He graduated from Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, Tennessee. After completing two years at Wingate Junior College in North Carolina, he went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BA in Graphic Arts. He had an innate gift for art and drew African animals as well as portraits. John was a member of Shandon Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother, Etta "Jean" Phillips, of Laurens, SC; his brothers, T. Mark Phillips (Janice), of Blythewood, SC, and Paul L. Phillips of Ft. Worth, Texas; his sister, Beth Gestring (Wes), of Mafeking, South Africa; a nephew and five nieces; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene D. Phillips, and his nephew Mark Daniel Phillips.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21, in the chapel at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, Laurens, SC, led by Chaplain Rev. Lawton Neely.
