John Phillips Rust, Sr., 65, of Blythewood, died Sunday, October 20, 2013. Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on September 27, 1948, he was a son of the late Robert H. and Gladys M. Morro Rust. John had a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina and was the owner of J & L Paint and Body. He had most recently worked with Lonnie Roberts Paint and Body. Mr. Rust was an entrepreneur who was very involved in his community and politics, even running for House District #77 and the Richland District 2 School Board. John enjoyed time outdoors, was a hobbyist, and was well known for his collectables shop at the Barnyard Flea Market.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene F. Rust; sons, John P. Rust, Jr. and Darrin Lee Rust (Barbara); grandchildren, Christopher, Melissa and Ashley Rust; great grandchildren, Josiah and Haley; brother, Robert Rust; sisters, Faye Taylor, Sue Frame, Betty Tisdale, Joyce Vandermeer and Helen Brumley; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a daughter, Yolanda Rust.
A graveside service for Mr. Rust will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, October 24th, at Memorial Gardens of Columbia, 9301 Wilson Blvd, Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock, Wednesday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia.
