John Baynon Thomas, Jr., 70, of Winnsboro, died Saturday, September 26, 2015. Born in Columbia on May 29, 1945, he was son of Margaret Georgiana Fridy Thomas and the late John B. Thomas, Sr. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Winnsboro. Mr. Thomas began his military career in the US Marine Corps and completed his service in the SC Army National Guard. He was a 1963 graduate of Brookland Cayce High School. He received his degree in Electronic Engineering in 1971 from Midland Technical Education Center, and his BA Degree from USC in 1981. He also received a degree in Industrial Technology in Machine Tool from Midlands Technical College in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Marcia Backus Thomas; his mother; son, Andrew S. Thomas of Columbia; daughter, Elizabeth H. Thomas of Richmond, VA; sister, Alice t. Shewbart of Franklin, NC. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marcia T. Joyner.
A Graveside service will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, September 30th at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Tuesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
