John Mason Yates

John Mason “Johnny” Yates, 79, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Born in Columbia on April 29, 1947, he was the son of the late Mason Farquhar Yates and Anne Rosamond Horne Yates.

Johnny was a lifelong Columbian who cherished his hometown, his family, and the many friendships he made throughout his life. He attended Schneider Elementary School, Hand Middle School, and Dreher High School. He was a proud member of the Dark Horseman Fraternity Club and was one of the founding members of the Columbia Pig Party, a beloved Columbia tradition that recently celebrated its 57th annual gathering.

Johnny graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. In 1973, he founded Builders Specialties, Inc., beginning a successful career in the flooring industry and establishing a business that became an important part of his life and legacy.

Johnny also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He completed his basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist.

One of Johnny’s greatest joys was sharing life with his beloved wife, Sandy. Together, they played competitive tennis for many years, a passion that brought them countless friendships, and wonderful memories. Johnny had a gift for making friends and a is remembered by all who knew him for his quick wit and unforgettable humor.

Above all, Johnny was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra “Sandy” Young Yates; his children, John Mason Yates Jr. (Keely) and Kathryn Yates Poe; his cherished grandchild, Saylor Suzette Yates; his sister, Jennings Yates Howard; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he held very dear.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Yates Jordan.

A service celebrating Johnny’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Extension, Columbia, South Carolina. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Johnny will be remembered for his love of family, his loyalty to his friends, his entrepreneurial spirit, his service to his country, and the many lives he touched throughout his 79 years. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry his love and legacy with them always.
