Joseph James Beily, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Born April 12,1929, in Berwick, PA, he was the son of the late Conrad and Paraskeva (Balowski) Beily. Married for 66 years, he was the devoted and loving husband to Jean Zimmerman Beily. They settled in WIllow Grove, PA and lived there until they retired and moved to Columbia, SC, where they lived for over 25 years. He was a member at Northeast Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
He was a graduate of Berwick High School Class of 1947 and attended Bloomsburg College and University of Delaware. He started his career at Chrysler Corporation in Delaware where he tested military tanks and then moved into sales and service for the rest of his professional career, first at Master Inc. and then Hajoca Corporation.
Joseph served in the Army during the Korean War. He was on the front lines as a Forward Observer and directed artillery rounds for many battles including The Battle of Bloody Ridge, Battle of Heartbreak Ridge and Battle of the Punchbowl,
Joseph was an avid golfer throughout his life and won many tournaments and a member of the "Hole-in-One" Club. He was a member at Woodlands Golf and Country Club in Columbia, SC for many years and if he wasn't golfing, he would be in the members lounge playing cards with his golfing friends. He was a self-taught repair man and could fix anything. He loved to help others and would always lend a hand to his neighbors and complete strangers. He was a dog lover and had several shelties and collies throughout his life. He walked his dogs daily and always carried dog treats in his pocket.
Joseph, also affectionately known as Pap-Pap, is survived by his wife, Jean Zimmerman Beily; a daughter, Jodi Beily Farrell (Christopher) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Brooke Farrell, Summer Farrell and Sutton Farrell; nieces and a nephew.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, John Beily and Fred Beily; and two sisters, Martha Pohowsky and Helen Mackes.
There will be a private graveside service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia SC. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
