Obituary

Joseph "Joe" William Boykin, Sr., 67, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 18, 1945, in Rock Hill, SC, he was a son of the late John King Boykin, Sr., and Phoebe Pitts Boykin. He was widowed by his first wife, Jane Shillinglaw Boykin, and is survived by his wife Patty Leary Wheeler Boykin.

Joe spent his formative years in Rock Hill where he attended Rock Hill High School and also Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN. He graduated from Clemson University and moved to Charlotte, NC, later moving to Columbia, SC. Joe was a successful salesman working for several chemical and dye companies. He particularly enjoyed his time working with his father for C.H. Patrick Chemical Company in Greenville, SC.

In addition to his wife, Patty, Joe is survived by son, Joseph William Boykin, Jr., of Matthews, NC, and his fiancée, Ashlyn Anderson; daughter, Beth Alexander of Charlotte, NC, and her husband, Chad; step-son, Chad Wheeler of Wilmington, NC, and his wife, Michelle; step-daughter, Allison Cox of Columbia and her husband, Johnston; grandchildren, Carter and Tyler Alexander, Elliott Cox, and Chandler Wheeler; brother, John King Boykin, Jr., of Dalton, GA, and his wife, Jacki; sister, Phoebe Boykin Johnson of West Springs, SC, and her husband, Gene; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Joe had many close friends who will miss him deeply. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Joe loved life and lived it to the fullest.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 31st, from 5 until 8 o'clock at the home of Allison and Johnston Cox, 1728 Hollywood Drive, Columbia, SC. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Joe's life 4 o'clock, Saturday, Feb. 2nd, at 599 Smythe Rd, Fort Mill, SC. A private service will be held in the chapel of Joe's childhood church, Oakland Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Laurelwood Cemetery.
