Joseph Layton Brazell, 70, of Columbia, died on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Born July 12, 1953, in Columbia, he is survived by his wife, Jackie Brazell, he was a son of the late Ronald C. Brazell and Lizzie Redmond Brazell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Jackie Brazell; children, Ron Brazell, Mary Brazell, Grace Nettles (Andrew), Kathy Wood Brazell, Joey Brazell (Dee Dee), and Matthew Miller (Vanessa); 13 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his sister, Lois Busby. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, John Brazell; grandson Felix Brazell; sister, Rosetta Brunnemer, as well as his brothers, Ronald Cleveland Brazell, Jr. and Weston J Brazell.
Joseph will be remembered as a good, Christian man of strong faith. He never met a stranger and would help anyone in need whether he knew them or not. He and his wife, Jackie Brazell, fostered many children together and provided them with a place to call home. His children and grandchildren all called him "Daddy" as he was a strong father figure in their lives. Joseph started his own business, AA Signs, and built it from the ground up with hard work and dedication. Altogether, he had over 50 years in the signage business, having started when he was 14 years old. Joseph will be deeply missed by all his friends and family.
The funeral service for Mr. Brazell will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday, February 4th at Faith Baptist Church, 801 South Maple Street, Columbia, SC 29205. The visitation will be held from 4 until 6 o'clock Saturday at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC 29223. The family will also receive guests at the family residence on the days prior to visitation.
