Joseph Devon Hardison, aged 77, passed away peacefully in his bed at home on January 12, 2025. A retired service-connected disabled veteran with over 28 years of honorable service to this great country, Joseph's life was defined by unwavering loyalty, dedication, and boundless love for his family and nation.
Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Joseph, fondly known as "Happy Jack," radiated joy and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. In his youth, he displayed exceptional talent as a left-handed pitcher, earning an opportunity to play professional baseball. However, he chose a higher calling, dedicating his life to service by joining the United States Army, where he forged a distinguished career.
Joseph married Glorious Pearson, embracing her two sons, Thomas and Timothy, as his own. Together, they embarked on a journey of love and resilience, beginning with his first military assignment in Baumholder, Germany, where he became the proud father of his daughter, Deborah.
Throughout his illustrious military career, Joseph embodied the core values of the Soldier's Creed: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. As a Drill Sergeant, he mentored countless soldiers, imparting the skills to succeed and the principles that guided his own life. Inspired by his steadfast example, both his sons proudly followed in his footsteps by serving in the Army, carrying forward his legacy of dedication and honor.
Despite his challenges, including the harsh realities of war and personal struggles, Joseph remained steadfast in his devotion to his country and family. His strength, wisdom, and kindness were a guiding light for his loved ones and all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Glorious; his children, Timothy and Deborah; five cherished grandchildren; three beloved great-grandchildren; and two sisters and one brother, all from Jacksonville, NC. His memory also lives on in the countless soldiers he trained and the many friends who affectionately knew him as "Happy Jack."
The funeral service for Mr. Hardison will be held at 11 o'clock, Thursday, January 16th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. A visitation will precede the service at the funeral home beginning at 10 o'clock. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Mr. Hardison will lie in repose from 12 o'clock until 6 o'clock, Wednesday, January 15th, for those who wish to view.
In place of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity supporting disabled veterans, honoring Joseph's unwavering commitment to his fellow servicemembers.
