CMSgt. Joseph Calvin Hutchinson, Jr., USAF, Ret., 92, of Columbia, died Friday, January 18, 2013. Born June 7, 1920 in Exway, NC he was a son of the late Joseph Calvin Hutchinson, Sr. and Mordecie Hunsucker Hutchinson. Mr. Hutchinson was a veteran of WWII including The Battle of the Bulge and The Berlin Airlift. He also served during the Vietnam War. He retired after having proudly served 31 years, 7 months and 11 days. A member of College Place United Methodist Church and the McLeod-Guilds Sunday School Class, Mr. Hutchinson was an avid golfer, loved wood working and enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include his daughter, Lillian Rosetta (Harry) Hunter of Columbia; granddaughter, Teresa Lee (Glenn) O'Brien of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; grandson, Harry Douglas Hunter, Jr., of Alexandria, VA; great-grandson, Connor Joseph O'Brien; sisters, Serena Wilson of Gainesville, GA and Polly Gathings of Charlotte, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hutchinson was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Etheredge Hutchinson; brothers, Cecil and Mark Hutchinson; sister, Johnsie Caulder.
A funeral service for Mr. Hutchinson will be held at 1 o'clock, Monday, January 21, 2013 at College Place United Methodist Church with The Rev. Tiffany Knowlin officiating. Interment and committal service will be held at 1 o'clock, Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Sunday evening at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
