Obituary

Julia Green Colson passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012. She was born May 5, 1926 in Wake County, NC to James Etheldred Green and May Lawrence Green. Mrs. Colson was the wife of the late E. Pascal Colson for almost 46 years before his death in January of 1996.

After finishing high school in Raleigh, she graduated from Mars Hill College (1945) and Meredith College (1947). She also earned master's degrees in the field of education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1950) and the University of South Carolina (1973). After retiring in 1989 from the Richland County Public School system she became even more involved in volunteer work. Julia's method was often teaching English as a second language but the focus was always on sharing her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her other volunteer work included Meals on Wheels and serving as a volunteer chaplain at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital and White Oak nursing home. She was also deeply involved with ministering to the community of international students and residents, both through First Baptist Church and the Columbia Council for Internationals. As a young lady, Julia had wanted to be a foreign missionary, but God brought the mission field to her.

Mrs. Colson is survived by two sons, David (Jane) Colson of Harrisburg, NC and Marvin (Ava) Colson of Bennettsville, SC; three grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Karen Colson, all of Harrisburg; and brother, Francis Arthur Green of Chickamauga, GA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James Elmore Green, Edwin Roger Green, Mary Winston Green Holder and Thomas Partin Green.

A service will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, November 24th, at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel. The family will receive friends in Lindsey Chapel beginning at 1 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1306 Hampton St., Columbia, 29201; Oliver Gospel Mission, 1100 Taylor St., Columbia, 29202; or Samaritan's Purse. P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC, 28607-3000.
