Julia "Peggy" Gardner Denny, 93, widow of Hermin B. Denny, M.D., to whom she was married for 60 years, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at Agape Hospice House in Lexington, SC.
Born May 28, 1928, in Bethune, SC, she was the only daughter of the late Barr Harris Gardner and Celess Smith Gardner. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Barr Gardner, Jr., John "Jack" Gardner, Wilson Gardner, and Bobby Gardner.
Peggy was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church, Good News Sunday School Class, Prayer Ministry, and was a Greeter for the church until her health prevented her from continuing.
After moving to Columbia, Peggy was very active in the Medical Auxiliary Alliance. She was a former member and past president of the Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Auxiliary Alliance and served on the state board. During her membership, she served as a delegate to the American Medical Auxiliary Alliance in New York, NY.
Peggy enjoyed gardening and filled her home with fresh flowers. She was a past member and past president of the Iris Club in Bishopville and a member of the Candy Tuft Garden Club in Columbia. She always shared her flowers with her family, friends, and those in the hospital or confined in their homes. She delighted in making floral arrangements for her friends at Wildewood Downs Retirement Community and the Ladies Luncheons there.
Peggy was the epitome of a Southern Lady. She was both gracious and giving. Her home was always welcoming to many friends and family. Peggy was the matriarch of the family and they were all influenced by her love, guidance, and strong faith.
Survivors include her sons, Bruce Denny (Sandy) of Bishopville, SC, Lauren Denny (Steve Campell) of Arabi, LA; and daughter, Peggy Ann Burr (David) of Cayce, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bruce Denny, II of Georgetown, SC, Chris Denny (Laurie) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Jennifer Siegler (Scot) of Columbia, Julie Warren (Ward) of Lexington, and Hunter Denny (Annette) of Manning, SC; as well as 14 great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Peggy will be held at 1 o'clock Monday, November 15th at Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC, with Rev. Eric Walter officiating.
Burial will follow at 3:30 o'clock at Piedmont Cemetery, 121 Piedmont Road, Bishopville, South Carolina 29010. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 12 o'clock in the Atrium of Northeast Presbyterian Church.
