Obituary

Elgin - Julia A. Vanderpool, 83, of Elgin died Thursday, July 13, 2017. Born on October 9, 1933 in Dekalb, Texas, to the late Roland Earl and Lela Maggie Thornton Thompson, Julia was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all. Julia started a Quilt Group at Royersford Baptist Church in Pennsylvania during the 1980's. After moving to Columbia with her husband, she founded a quilt group at Northeast Presbyterian Church that later was renamed in her honor The Julia Vanderpool Quilters at Northeast Presbyterian Church. They have sent more than 500 quilts all over the world. When she was not able to go on mission trips, she offered quilts made with lots of love to people in orphanages, flood and fire victims, or anyone else that just needed comfort. After her husband's retirement, they traveled the country in an RV visiting friends and family and historical sites. A member of Northeast Presbyterian Church, she enjoyed being a member of the Good News Sunday School class.

Survivors include sons, Richard Vanderpool Jr., Thomas Vanderpool and Samuel Vanderpool (Barbara); daughter, Carol Antley; like-her-daughter, Deborah Carnes; grandchildren, Jennifer Symms (Lawrence), Christina Moss, David Moss (Rachel), Ian Greulich (Jessica), Melissa Wahl (Master Sgt. Shaun Wahl), Douglas Greulich (Jena); 11 great grandchildren; and a sisters-in-law, Virginia Cummings, and Betty Thompson Erie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard F. Vanderpool, and a brother, James Earl Thompson.

The funeral service for Mrs. Vanderpool will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, July 17th at Northeast Presbyterian Church with Dr. George D. Crow, III officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Grand Hall of the church beginning at 1 o'clock.
