Dr. Julian Bonham Shand, Jr., 88 of Columbia, died on December 9, 2025, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Born November 6, 1937, in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Julian Bonham Shand, Sr. and Lucy McDonald Shand. Dr. Shand earned his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of South Carolina and his PhD from the University of North Carolina. He was professor of physics, astronomy, and computer science at Berry College in Rome, Ga for more than 30 years. He was married to Mary Jane Gregg Shand for 60 years until her death in 2024, and they resided in Rome, Georgia from 1969-2000. Later they relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where they enjoyed living in closer proximity to family and friends. He lived his final years in the loving care of Solutions for Living at Home and Laurel Crest Retirement Community.
Dr. Shand was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Rome, GA for 30 years and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia during his childhood and after retirement. He was a long-time member of The Columbia Cotillion Club.
Survivors include his sons, Peter Gregg Shand (Jessica) of Columbia, James Bonham Shand of Marietta, GA, and Jonathan Heyward Shand of Atlanta, GA; granddaughters, Grace Bonham Shand of Columbia, and Louisa Heyward Shand of Columbia. He also leaves behind his sister, Lucy Shand Edmunds and his brother-in-law, Thomas Bryant Edmunds of Columbia; nieces Pride Edmunds Owens and Juliana Edmunds King; and nephew Dr. Thomas Bryant Edmunds, Jr.
The graveside service for Dr. Shand will be held at 3 o'clock, December 23, in the Churchyard of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter St, Columbia, SC 29201.
