Obituary

Katherine Gibson Swain, 85, of West Columbia, died peacefully at home Thursday, April 16, 2020, with her son and daughter-in-law at her side. Katherine was born a true coal miner's daughter, on February 7, 1935 in Pine Top, KY, to the late Jasper and Verdie Gibson. Katherine was the only one of nine children to escape the holler. She married the late Felix Winfield Swain in 1956 and raised her son not far away in Jenkins, KY. The couple eventually moved east and settled in Durham, NC where she remained for nearly 20 years following her husband's death. She was an active member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church until moving to West Columbia to be with her son. She enjoyed embroidery, puzzles, and time with her beloved grandchildren.

Survivors includer her son, Larry Swain and his wife Jean; grandchildren, Cindy Swain Smith, David Swain and Michael Swain; eleven great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

In light of the Novel COVID 19 Virus, a service to celebrate Katherine life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest next to beloved her husband in Durham. Larry would like to extend his appreciation to Hudson Funeral Home, of Durham, NC, for their many years of friendship and service to the family. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family locally.
