Kendall P. Eyers, Sr.

Kendall Paul Eyers, Sr., went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. His family honors and rejoices in his life and his legacy. A son of the late Hazel and Fred Eyers, Kendall was born on February 6, 1923 in Madison, Wisconsin, but was an honorary southerner, having spent most of his life in South Carolina. He never met a stranger and had unselfish love for all people, especially his family. Kendall had many talents and was legendary for fixing anything and was a mentor and a positive influence to many people. He wanted everyone to know that he had a full and happy life. Kendall was not only an excellent father and grandfather, but was a wonderful role model for his nieces, nephews, and children in his neighborhood and church. He was a member of Bayview Baptist Church in Columbia, where he raised his children; and later attended Hillcrest Baptist Church in Elgin. He was drafted in 1944 and stationed at Fort Jackson, where he met his bride, Callie Zeigler, at the skating rink. They were married when he went AWOL for the weekend on August 26, 1944. She was waiting for him to return from Germany with their first son, Kendall, Jr. He arrived at the hospital in his World War II uniform. They went on to have 3 more children; Michael, Jan, and Becky, and lived most of their life in Columbia. He and Callie were married 64 years. He was a hero to his country and his children. He served as a paratrooper in World War II, and participated in the “Varsity Jump” over Germany in March of 1945. He was an avid fisherman who pulled many fish out of Lake Murray, where he had a cabin for over 40 years. Kendall was an electrician and retired from General Services Administration. After retirement, he went to work for his son Kendall, Jr, for 22 more years. Survivors include his children, Kendall Paul Eyers, Jr. (Linda), Michael Allen Eyers (Donna), Jan Marie Kelly, and Becky Randall; grandchildren, Kevin, Brian, Sherry, Ashley, Jessica and Melissa; and great-grandchildren, Blake, Amber, Riley and Taylor; and sister, Jenny von Wald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Callie Cornelia Eyers. A celebration of life for Mr. Eyers will be held 12 o’clock, Friday, January 26th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 11 o’clock.
