Larry Napoleon Cook, 83, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Born January 11, 1940 in Winnsboro, SC, the son of the late John Wesley Cook and Minnie Mae Trimnal. He was the brother of Gurnie, Wayne, and Patricia. He served a mission in London, England, and remained a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout his life. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and graduated from Utah Technical College. He later returned to Utah where he raised two young daughters. He was a devoted father and grandfather.
He was proud of his work on the Utah Non-Profit Board of Housing, where he served and advocated for low-income housing for over 20 years with his dear friend, Marion Willey. In his later years, he enjoyed volunteering most days at Liberty Senior Center, which he described as his "greatest joy". He loved bringing joy and music to his community and played banjolele in the folk band Liberty Jamzz. He was an avid BYU Football fan and lived for football season each year.
Near the end of his life, he returned home to South Carolina to be near family and was lovingly cared for by Mike and Shannon Ketcham.
Larry is survived by his two daughters, Dianna Ramirez and Susan Vanderpool, granddaughters Ashley Shaffer (Ricardo) and Riley Estrada (Marco), grandson Jeremy Devon Vanderpool, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Larry is predeceased by his sister Patricia Branham, his brother Wayne, his grandson, Daniel Ramirez, and his beloved infant son, David Jonathan.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 3 o'clock at Centerville Cemetery, Ridgeway, SC 29130. The family wishes to thank Amedisys Hospice and Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, for their care.
