Larry C. Sloan, Sr., 77, of Columbia, died Thursday, September 18, 2014. Born October 11, 1936 in Columbia, he was a son of the late Jimmy and Glennie Sloan. Larry served as a City of Columbia police officer during the 1960's, and later was a lieutenant with the SC Department of Corrections. However, Larry's greatest enjoyment came from working with cars. He spent many years operating Sloan Motor Company, and even in retirement, he greatly enjoyed participating in local auto auctions. Larry also enjoyed travel, and the cruise industry will be greatly saddened by his passing.
Survivors include his son, Larry C. Sloan, Jr.; sister, Barbara Logan of Leesville; sisters-in-law, Joni Sloan of Columbia, and Miriam (Ted) Martin of Saluda; and brother-in-law, Steve Barwick of Jedburg. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Carolyn Bouknight Sloan; brother, Richard Sloan; and sister, Ann Barwick. The family would like to extend special thanks to Larry's dear friend, Ronnie Brinson; and to his beloved friend, relative, and employee, Joyce P. Lee for their care and support.
A funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday, September 21st at Fair Lawn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott Bratton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia.
