Professor Larry Marion Stephens, age 70, died May 29, 2018. Born June 26, 1947 in Frankfurt, Germany, he was the son of the late Lawrence W. and Alice F. Stephens. He received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He also served honorably as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After returning to Columbia, he enjoyed over thirty years of teaching and research in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Carolina.

He loved God and country, family and friends. He enjoyed playing guitar, sailing, flying gliders, and hiking, and was keenly interested in the exploration of the universe. Willing to tackle any project with enthusiasm and abandon, he was truly a skilled handyman.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Carruth, whom he called "Rock"; his two sisters, Ann Carlson (Randy) and Polly Nodine (Larry); niece, Katharine Moody; nephews: Jay Carlson, Jeremy and Max Nodine; Clay, George, and Cotton Carruth; and cousins.

A private memorial service for the family will be held in the Rutledge Chapel on the Horseshoe of the University of South Carolina, where he and Ellen were married. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
