Obituary

Lee Catoe, 98 passed away surrounded by love on September 13, 2023. Lee was born on June 2, 1925, in Kershaw County, South Carolina in the town of Mount Pisgah. son of Henry and Harriette Catoe. Lee was the youngest of 7 children born at home learning how to work farmland at a very early age.

Lee served in World War II in the European offensive earning a Purple Heart, Double Bronze Stars, and Field Commissions being Honorably Discharged as a First Lieutenant. He returned to South Carolina as a Hero and in 1949 he married the love of his life Bobbie Sowell Catoe.

Lee's life included many years in the trucking industry as a truck driver working for several companies including 46 years at Thurston Motor Lines. After his retirement he followed his passion for golf to Northwoods Golf course working for 25 years creating his famous chili and traveling the area golf courses as the oldest member of 'The Old Guard' usually shooting under his age at 97.

In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his sons, Dennis Catoe and Richard Catoe; brothers, Chester Catoe, Berkley "Berk" Catoe, Ralph Catoe, Jimmy Catoe, and sisters, Virginia Catoe Hughes, and Willie Catoe Hildreth.

Survivors include daughter in love, Roslyn Catoe of Columbia; grandchildren, Brandie Catoe McVey (Richard) of Irmo, Scott Catoe (Michele) of Chapin, and Kellie Catoe Hall (Brian) of Columbia; as well as his great grandchildren, Bralyn McVey, Kylie McVey, Whitley Leviner, Logan Leviner, Tyler Catoe, Wellslee Hall, Hampton Hall and many loved nieces and nephews.

Lee's ultimate joy in life was his 74-year marriage to Bobbie and their family. Bobbie and Lee were able to spend the last year of their life still living together being lovingly cared for by their family, many close friends, and National Health Care on Parklane Road.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock on Sunday, September 17th at Eau Claire Baptist Church, 4427 North Main St, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary for visitation prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eau Claire Baptist Church.
