Leila Mae LeGrand Nates, 89, of Elgin, died Friday, December 2, 2016. Born February 11, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Minnie Blanch Hawkins LeGrand. She was member of Spears Creek Baptist Church and a former member of Jackson Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Nates retired from Richland School District 2 and later from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Survivors include her daughters, Peggy Ford Herlong of Gaston, and Minnie Williams (Dean) of Elgin; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paris Y. Nates; sons, Thomas Nates, Paris Y. Nates, II, Woodrow O. Nates, and Robert "Butch" Nates; siblings, Lila Kirkland, John LeGrand, Joe LeGrand, and Evelyn Nates.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nates will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, December 5th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia with The Rev. Greg Sweet officiating. Interment will follow in Jackson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock, Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
