Leonidas O'Neil "Neil" Smith, a man whose life was a living testament to the power of love, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, at age 87, leaving a legacy of warmth and generosity. Guided by the biblical passage from John 13:34, he truly lived out the commandment to "love one another," extending boundless affection to his family, friends, and beloved pets, Rocky and Boomer.
Neil had a special knack for making everyone feel like family. With a wide-open front door and a welcoming heart, he never met a stranger—just friends he hadn't had the pleasure of knowing yet. His humor and warmth were a gift to all who knew him.
He had an endless passion for life. He genuinely loved the world around him, finding great joy in his many years of travel, from the grand wilderness of Alaska and Canada to his frequent getaways to Surfside on the serene coast of South Carolina. His appreciation for nature was evident in every home he lived in: a true horticulturist at heart, Neil had a special gift for creating peaceful gardens and loved caring for his plants, a quiet passion he pursued every day. A man of service, Neil honorably served his country in the United States Armed Forces.
Professionally, Neil built his career in the steel industry. He started at Congaree Iron and Steel in Columbia, SC, and served as the company's Vice President of Production Scheduling. He then moved to Hope, Arkansas, to assist in the establishment of TexArk Joist, where he oversaw shipping and later became Vice President during his 15 years with the company.
Neil was highly regarded for his strong leadership and exemplary work ethic, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout his career. After returning to Columbia in the late '80s, he continued to take on leadership positions, retiring in 2005 as the Executive Vice President for Consolidated Cargo Systems.
His devotion to Clemson University was a characteristic that stood out to everyone who knew him. He attended Clemson and was rarely seen without wearing the color orange or a tiger paw on any given day. But above all, Neil was a devoted family man who cherished every moment with his loved ones.
Neil is survived by his children, Kathy Sharpe and her husband, Woody Sharpe; Susan Kaufman and her husband, Tom Kaufman; and Robert Smith and his wife, Suzy Smith. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Creed and her husband, DJ Creed; Caroline West and her husband, Drew West; Garrett Kaufman; Abby Kaufman; and Banks Smith; as well as his great-grandchildren, Elle and James Creed.
Neil lived a life that embodied the words of Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." A life well lived, filled with curiosity, joy, and
faith. He is now resting in peace in the presence of God and Jesus, reunited with his beloved wife of 56 years, Veda, and all those who preceded him in Heaven.
The Smith family would like to express their profound thanks to the many individuals who provided such love and compassion over the past several months. They are especially grateful for the unwavering support of his dear friend, Sandra Smith, and the Wildewood Downs community. Neil deeply cherished the care given by Jackie Bennett, Cathy MacDaniel, Ms. Cleo Bradley, Troy Suber, Roy Balacanao, the Right at Home Caregivers, and Amedisys Hospice. The family also wishes to extend a special thank you to Neil's devoted medical team: Dr. Alan Peterson, Dr. Alan Brill, Dr. Scott Thompson, Dr. Kurt Meyer, and Dr. Fred Kudrik and their staff. They are also deeply grateful for the prayers and comfort from all their devoted family and
cherished friends during this difficult time.
In remembrance of Neil, Memorial gifts may be given to Brookgreen Gardens, a place he cherished for its beautiful landscapes and special exhibits. The family kindly requests that, in
place of flowers, you consider a donation to Consider the Lilies, a non-profit organization founded by Neil's granddaughter. Its mission is to share the abundant word of God, offering
Bibles and resources to help others root their lives in God's love, a testament to the way Neil lived his own life.
