Leon Tokunaga, 89, of Columbia, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Born on June 6, 1929, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Mitsuo and Myrtle Wagstaff Tokunaga. After graduating from Dreher High School, he attended the University of South Carolina and later became a member of the Gamecock Club. Leon and his late wife, Sadie, owned and operated Shandon Greenhouses and Tokunaga Wholesale Florist. He loved to travel as well as enjoyed vacationing at Lake Murray. Leon was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation for many years, where he was served as President for the Couples Sunday School Class at the church. He was a member of The SC and Midlands Florist Associations.
He is survived by his daughter, Lee Ann Faulling (Bruce); grandchildren, Nicole Cottrell and Joey Faulling (Cat); great-grandchildren, Isabella and Andy Cottrell, Lillie Lemon; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tokunaga was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Peeples Tokunaga; a daughter, Sara Tokunaga; and siblings, Frieda Rimer, Willie Mae Brown, Richard, Robert, Harry, Tommy, and Jimmy Tokunaga.
The funeral service for Mr. Tokunaga will be held 10 o'clock, Saturday, June 23rd, at Lutheran Church of the Incarnation. Burial will follow the service in Elmwood Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Friday evening at the home of Lee Ann and Bruce Faulling.
